 Now In: Beautiful/Decay

Beautiful/Decay was founded in 1996, a black-and-white, limited-run magazine with 300 copies printed at Kinkos. Founder Amir H. Fallah funded the first color issue with the sale of 5 paintings at a Chelsea gallery. He hoped to fill the void between fine, low, and street art. In nine years Beautiful/ Decay has bridged that gap and grown into a major force in art, music, and design.

Beautiful/Decay was established with a single principle: art is transcendent. Fine art informs graffiti and vice versa. Musical aesthetics inform the design world. Punk rock informs indie and hip-hop. Beautiful/Decay recognizes that the impulse to create is universal whether the hand is lifting a spray can, paintbrush, microphone, or guitar.

We are one of the few magazines to recognize that common labels/buzzwords (emo, street art, post-punk, urban design, indie, hip-hop) are simply marketing pigeonholes. A Beautiful/ Decay reader could be involved with any, all, or none of these areas. By catering to all these facets of art, we have captivated this diverse readership, our advertisers have gained an array of potential customers, and Beautiful/Decay is flourishing.

The people who make Beautiful/Decay are involved in shaping art every day, from fine art, to photography, to independent music management. This is clear in the incredible visuals and painstaking design of each issue that makes us a definitive resource for artists. Due to the unique fusion of fine art with avant-garde culture within our artwork and layout, issues of B/D have become collector’s items.

Our content is always fresh, showcasing exceptional new musicians, artists, and designers. We do not limit ourselves to genres, niches, or what is considered marketable. The only unifying theme is quality, so our readers look to us as a trusted source of new talent. Many of our featured artists go on to work for our advertisers as creative directors, and the art we publish directly influences contemporary fashion, design, and music. Beautiful/Decay has become the magazine that other magazines look to by not propagating trends, but setting them.
